Viola en haar tweelingbroer Sebastian worden na een schipbreuk op de kust van Illyrië gescheiden en allebei denken ze dat de ander is verdronken. Viola vermomt zich als een jongeman met de naam Cesario en treedt in dienst van de hertog Orsino. Orsino stuurt Cesario naar de teruggetrokken Olivia om haar het hof te maken, wat allerlei verwikkelingen veroorzaakt.
