According to the Hollywood Reporter "Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix, the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment." 'The Matrix' Reboot in the Works at Warner Bros.
The Wachowskis are not even involved! How does this make others feel?
I'm stunned, the first film is less than 18 years old, with the online game available until 2009. This is too recent for my taste to be remade. Without the Wachowskis it could be odd.
On the other hand the sequels failed to completely live up to the hype, so I'm torn about the possibilities. Maybe they'd make a succesfull film series, with new predictions about the future, that incorporates the background from the games and Animatrix, shows earlier conflicts with the Machine AI and all that. But overall, I'm still a bit shocked.

Is it a reboot or a sequel? I had the impression that at the end of the trilogy nothing had really changed, something like a stalemate agreement, mostly on the terms of The Machine.

Good question! 'Relaunch ' is a vague term that could easily mean sequels and bringing the Machine wars from the other media into films, so prequels perhaps as well. Zak Penn could be workable choice to continue the story due to his comics background.
Today's article 'The Matrix': Why Now Is the Right (And Wrong) Time for a Reboot clearly states the THR's reboot-interpretation, but whether that's the Warner stance remains to be seen..

Relaunch or reboot. Just don't remake.

Yep, just remaking it as is would be the worst option, I doubt they'd do that. I mean, again that is. Hopefully the studios have learnt their lesson from previous remake failures.

I don't get it. First of all, it's not clear to me what a "reboot" actually is, as others mentioned. Second, whatever "reboot" means, cmon! There's so many good sci fi books crying to be adapted to the big screen :( and also not sci fi, of course, I mean, my point is: what happened to creativity and innovation? Why so many "reboots", remakes and sequels? So many of them completely unnecessary (err.. jumanji? Really? Why?!). I admit some of the nostalgia is exciting (like Villeneuve's take on Blade Runner), but mostly this pseudo-nostalgic back to the 80s or 90snor whatever just feels like eating toilet paper.

The only reboot that would make sense is to create a live action movie of The Second Renaissance; the rise of the machines and the 'Machine War' would be a lot of fun to watch... fans have always wanted to see this. However, it's already done in the Animatrix and it's brilliant, so not really necessary.

The Wachowskis already milked and ruined the original film by making all of these sequels and self referential world-building nonsense.
Can Warner really ruin something that's already been so minced, processed and repackaged so many times over? I say have at it... take that matrix-nerd money all the way to the bank...

I read later articles that said that the story will be a PREQUEL, focusing on young Morpheus. I would be interested in that. The writer seems to be taking a reverent approach.

Keanu Reeves in the only Neo I want to watch.
What's with all the reboots, prequels and remakes. Don't we have any more talented writers to make a decent original movie? Or do the film studio's just want to make a quick buck on revisiting popular titles.

AusFem: I feel you. However, if you really think about it, NOTHING in art is truly "original." Everything is derived from something else. I do feel that Hollywood is somewhat scared of what's new, though.

I get it Satch. I understand remakes of much older movies. But movies like the Matrix are still pretty current as such.
Hollywood is definitely scared of what's new. I've noticed that new tv shows don't even last a season because they aren't an instant hit.
The Dirty Dancing remake is being released soon. I predict a big flop.
