Discuss Cold Fish

I know that Sion Sono is most well known for Suicide Club and Love Exposure, but this was my favorite film by him. Infact, it's my favorite film of all time. I liked Love Exposure as well, but as much as this movie.

Suicide Club was not my cub of tea at all. I actually liked the sequel/fanfiction-of-Sucide-Club movie Noriko's Dinner Table more than the original Suicide Club. Noriko's Dinner Table is my second favorite Sion Sono movie.

I won't say that Cold Fish is for everyone. It's an absurdist comedy.

I've never seen a movie like this before that assumes the identity of a regular thriller, but hints at its underlying absurdist elements in brief glimpses, only revealing it's true absurdist nature with the very last shot. A shot of the planet earth, decidedly small, floating in a beautiful void.

I would say it has the same theme as the movie Melacholia, but having the ruse of a complex narrative and revealing everything to be pointless in the end it is much more effective at realizing its goal. Rarely do you ever find a movie that changes the way you look at the world, to me this was one of them.
