Discuss The Gray Man

He's great as the stoic Captain America but outside of that I think I've despised him in every other movie I've seen. Especially when he tries to play evil/sinister he's just not believable at all. He comes off as smarmy and trying too hard.

Captain America...WTF??? In the famous words of Zorg - "I am very disappointed!" Yeah, I can't think of anything else, besides MCU, where Evans was an enjoyable character. Like in F4, he was SUPER annoying. I haven't finished watching The Gray Man, and already felt the need to vent about The Cap.

I'm sorry but both of y'all are TRIPPIN. He was great in the movie Cellular I don't care what ANYBODY says that movie

SLAPPED.

Kim Basinger? William H. Macy?? Allstar cast, great music, and Chris Evans is doing a damn good job in a B movie that few people saw but it is criminally underrated in my opinion. Way better than his portrayal of Captain America but...I think that's more so about how dull the character is than his acting skills.

Underrated? IMDB has 6.5 rating for Cellular. That is very good. Now, mind you...it looks like a movie I would have watched, but I have zero recollection watching it. Two possibilities - 1. I was not impressed and forgot it right after watching it (maybe deleted it without even finishing watching it), or 2. reviews by friends were so negative, I could not be bothered. Anyhoooo...sure, nice line up of stars....but that does not mean a movie can't fail. Possibly it is also just a chic flick...

Definitely not a chick flick haha its an action B movie. I was being hyperbolic, its by no means a masterpiece hahah but its a really fun movie. I saw it as a kid on one of the movie channels like cinemax or whatever it was called back then. It became one of those movies I'd watch whenever it was on...saw it again recently expecting it to be garbage but I really enjoyed it. I'm sure anyone who saw it when it came out and had high expectations for it would've been really pissed lmao its mediocre but...good for what it is. Chris Evans answers a call from a woman whose been kidnapped (Basinger) and then tries to stay on the line with her to help her, dirty cops are involved so going to the cops proves useless and...hi-jinks ensue. I think he's good in comedic roles in non comedies if that makes sense. Like this movie isn't a comedy but he's good with timing and all that. I remember thinking the same thing when I saw Fantastic Four but I was a kid and haven't seen it since, ha. I do agree that he's good as Captain America but...yeah, its not the most fun role to play I'm sure and the character lacks depth. I also agree that he doesn't make a good or convincing villain.

I also remember many movies soooo fondly from my youth, but some are just unwatchable today. Like just about any Burt Reynolds movie. (with the exception of Deliverance and The Longest Yard). Dirty Harry movies were huge when they came out, but not so fun anymore. Jaws is another movie...best watched backwards. It is about a friendly shark that magically gives limbs to cirpes and saves them.

Cellular wasn't a bad movie but you could have easily replaced Evans with almost anybody else. I'm not saying he hasn't been in otherwise good movies (I have fond memories of Not Another Teen Movie), but when he's "trying" to act he's horrible at it, especially when he's playing villainous characters. This movie, Fierce Creatures, Knives Out, even in movies where he's just playing a Ryan Reynolds copy like in Losers/F4 he still comes off as "trying" to act.

The Marvel movies mostly just require him to be stoic and he does that pretty well, that's it.

He's not a terrible actor (best thing about Sunshine) but yes, this wasn't his greatest performance. He was meant to be smarmy but it just felt too OTT. I thought him and Gosling played well off each other though.

The thing about Gosling is he always underplays his performances and leans heavily into stoicism which I think works for him, but I've seen him in roles where he's expressing more emotion and don't think it works as well for him.

But Chris Evans in this movie, I just think all the choices were wrong. The way he plays it, his hair, the mustache, his clothes. It reminded me of Jim Carrey in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, except Carrey's character actually fit with his movie.

For what it's worth, Evans has indicated a long time ago that he wants to direct films.

He was in a film called London where he plays this coked out, broken hearted dude who crashes his ex's going away party. The majority of the film is spent in an upstairs bedroom bathroom away from the party doing lines with none other that Jason Statham as they discuss the usual drugged out topics while he builds up the cajones to go out into the party to try and get his ex to get back with him. Not a terrible film but his acting was not that bad in it.

Um hello has anyone even seen Snow Piercer?

I like that movie quite a bit, but he still did not really fit in that role. The "babies taste best" line is meant to be chilling but it's hilarious because of how he's delivering it. Evans has appear in movies I've linked despite him like Not Another Teen Movie, Cellular, Puncture, etc, but he never quite seems to fit. Captain America is the only role where I think he fit perfectly, almost everything else he seems like he's either trying too hard or he's underplaying it to the point of seeming on ambien or something.
