Sterling Walter Hayden, nascut Sterling Relyea Walter (Upper Montclair, 26 de març de 1916 − Sausalito, 23 de maig de 1986), fou un actor i escriptor estatunidenc. Es va especialitzar en westerns i cinema negre. Hayden va ser un aventurer i un home d'acció, sense res a envejar als personatges que va interpretar més tard en el cinema. Als 17 anys, va fugir en un vaixell per veure el món i es va convertir en pescador en els grans bancals de Terranova. Després, va servir com a mariner, i va fer la volta al món diverses vegades. A la dècada de 1940, Hayden es convertiria en model i poc després signaria un contracte amb Paramount Studios. En el seu primer film, coneixeria Madeleine Carroll, de la qual s'enamoraria i amb qui es va casar. Però després d'un parell de films, abandonaria Hollywood per servir com a agent secret a les ordres de William J. Donovan a la OSS. Hayden s'allistà en el Cos de Marines sota el nom de John Hamilton (mai amb el seu autèntic nom). Sterling Walter Hayden, born Sterling Relyea Walter, was an American actor and author. He didn't really harbor any aspirations of being an actor, dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and hired on as mate on a schooner. He was a ship's captain at 22, and in need of cash to buy his own boat, established himself as a model in New York, discovered by Paramount Studios talent scouts and offered a contract.

Sterling Hayden, the handsome tall blond actor who played wholesome leading-man movie roles in the 1940's and 1950's and later weathered into a rough-hewn solid character actor in films such as ''Dr. Strangelove'', ''The Godfather,'' "Nine to Five" and "King of the Gypsies". He appeared in 71 feature films and tv-productions from the debut in "Virginia" 1941 to the tv mini-series "The Blue and the Gray" in 1982.

He wrote of his obsessive fascination with the sea in a 1963 autobiography, ''Wanderer,'' and in 1970 his 700-page epic novel of the sea, ''Voyage,'' was a main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club.

Sterling Hayden appeared in the German documentary, ''Pharos of Chaos,'' (1983) filmed aboard his barge in Europe, and seemed to be in an alcoholic stupor much of the time, supplementing his wine intake with hashish. On camera he said: ''What confuses me is I ain't all that unhappy. So why do I drink, I don't know.''

Sterling Hayden joue dans de nombreux films très admirés, comme Johnny Guitare ou Quand la ville dort (The Asphalt Jungle). Il a collaboré à deux reprises avec Stanley Kubrick (L'Ultime Razzia et Docteur Folamour). Il joue également le rôle du capitaine Mc Kluskey de la police new-yorkaise dans Le Parrain de Francis Ford Coppola.

L'Office of Strategic Services, ancêtre de la CIA, utilisait un vaste réseau d'agents secrets pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les Archives nationales américaines révèlent en 2008 des noms surprenants comme celui de Sterling Hayden, qui avait combattu aux côtés des partisans de Tito, en Yougoslavie.

Il fut aussi amené à témoigner devant l'HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee, l'organe du maccarthysme) qui l'a principalement interrogé sur sa brève adhésion au Parti Communiste américain, en 1945. Bien qu'affirmant ne se souvenir que du prénom de ses « camarades », il ne peut se dérober lorsqu'il s'agit d'admettre y avoir rencontré quelques personnes, notamment Abraham Polonsky. Il fut inscrit sur la liste noire du cinéma. D'après John Berry, interviewé par Bertrand Tavernier, il comprend rapidement son erreur et va se poster devant la commission, brandissant une pancarte sur laquelle était écrit « Ne dites rien, ils sont ignobles ». En 2008, son rôle en Yougoslavie auprès des combattants de Tito est évoqué dans le roman noir de Roger Martin Jusqu'à ce que mort s'ensuive (Le Cherche midi, puis Pocket en 2013).
