Discuss Henry Cavill

HC

Very exciting news today! I've been a fan of Highlander since I was lad. From the movies in all of their 80s, Queen slathered glory to the TV show with an actor who looked remarkably like one of my brothers. Being not shy with swords, and having a director as talented as Chad Stahelski at the helm, this is an opportunity like no other. Deep diving into franchise storytelling with all the tools at our disposal, is going to make this an adventure I (and hopefully all of you) shall never forget.

And as you can see from the swipe, I've lately been dipping into some of my Scottish heritage, and inadvertently getting my base line research underway! #Highlander

1 Thing Henry Cavill’s Highlander Reboot Won’t Change Confirmed By Director

Speaking with TheWrap, Stahelski spoke about his plans for the upcoming Highlander reboot and confirmed that the Queen songs would return for his movie, albeit with a mysterious caveat. Hinting that the original movie’s music will return “in a different way than you think,” he was still adamant that the Queen songs would play a role in the Cavill-led reboot. Check out his comments below: Yes. Probably in a different way than you think, but hardcore yes.

The director’s caveat that Queen's music will return in an entirely unexpected way suggests that audiences may not end up hearing the original versions of the songs but will instead encounter them in a different form altogether.

Whether this means Stahelski might seek to have more modern bands provide cover versions of the Queen tracks, or even look to feature instrumental versions of their iconic riffs, remains to be seen. Alternately, with Queen still actively touring as a band with Adam Lambert stepping in for the late Freddie Mercury, it may even be possible that Stahelski could be aiming to add some new and previously unheard Queen music to his movie. However, each of the aforementioned scenarios would inevitably generate some measure of backlash from fans keen to hear Mercury’s own inimitable vocals.

Instead, perhaps the most intriguing possibility rests in the franchise’s penchant for interweaving past and modern-day storylines. With Cavill’s character being an immortal who has lived for centuries, it may even be possible for audiences to get a chance to see him fighting in the 1980s at the height of Queen’s original popularity. A potential fight sequence breaking out at a Queen concert in the '80s would be a perfect means of honoring the original Highlander soundtrack while giving the music a different spin.

I’m very excited for this. A Feb. 2026 release would be right. They shouldn’t rush it. We’re almost in 2024.

HIGHLANDER REBOOT WITH HENRY CAVILL WILL BE JOHN WICK DIRECTOR’S NEXT FILM

In late 2023 Stahelski said his Highlander reboot was still in development. Not long after, Deadline reported Lionsgate was definitely “moving forward” with the project. Now we know it will be Stahelski’s next feature film.

That first feature will only be the start. This news comes as part of a larger deal with Lionsgate. The studio has also put the John Wick director in charge of the assassin franchise. He will have “creative oversight” of the popular series. Stahelski will also fill the same role for his budding new Highlander franchise. He will lead both properties across film, television, and other mediums. (Yup, it might not be long before Highlander returns to TV.)

“I am pleased to be able to grow my relationship with Lionsgate in this new oversight role for the John Wick universe and its further expansion,” said Stahelski in a statement. “John Wick is so close to my heart and to be able to continue shepherding it will be a blast for me. I’m so happy to also be launching another franchise with Highlander, a world that is so rich with engaging stories to be told.”

Previous reports said his first highlander film will also have a big-time budget topping $100 million. These new films will also touch upon elements long-time fans know and love about the franchise. During an interview last year Stahelski told Josh Horowitz, “Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering. So we have room to grow the property."

'This Goes Even Deeper': Henry Cavill Teases 'Extraordinary' Changes With Highlander Reboot

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cavill opened up on his fandom of the Highlander franchise and how he wants to do right by its legacy. However, he believes the reboot film will provide moviegoers with more depth and story than the original version, engaging fans along the way. "Obviously, I watched them when I was a lot younger, and have since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that," Cavill said.

Cavill also addressed recent comments from director Chad Stahelski that the Highlander reboot movie will honor the original 1986 film and the TV series, which ran from 1992 to 1998. The British actor praised the reboot script, penned by John Wick: Chapter 4's Michael Finch, suggesting it will take worthwhile risks with the story it aims to tell. "I can't speak to [the reboot embracing TV lore] at the moment. What they've done so far and what we're doing with the development of the script is extraordinary. I think people are gonna be really, really pleased," he said. "Big swings are important. You play it safe and you go, 'Eh, I guess it was fine.' But you take a big swing, and people love it. Or they hate it, and sometimes hating it is just as good."

The Highlander reboot is expected to premiere in 2026, though no official release window has been confirmed as yet by Lionsgate.

Henry Cavill Shows Up At Lionsgate CinemaCon: Teases ‘Highlander’; New Guy Ritchie 2025 Movie Gets Title

“If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet”

Such were Henry Cavill‘s promises about the new Higherlander movie he’s doing with Lionsgate and John Wick director Chad Stahelski. The star showed up at stuido’s 2024 CinemaCon sessions today. But there was more. The actor’s new movie with Jake Gyllenhaal and Eisa Gonzalez, and directed by Guy Ritchie for 2025 got a title — In the Grey.

Cavill expanded on Higherlander, “I’m a lover of the original movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it.” The first few movies “touched on the lore… but my goodness me oh my, we are going deep into these characters [their trials and tribulations].”
