Discuss Arcane

I'm not saying it isn't good, I enjoyed it for the most part. But I saw this everywhere on release, glowing with the kind of ratings and accolades that I don't think I've ever seen. It's at 91% here, 9.1 on IMDB, 100% on RT with a 96% audience rating and many reviews being 5 out of 5. These reviews and accolades being from both people familiar and unfamiliar with the game.

Yet when I finally got around to watching it it was... good. Nothing more. The animation and visuals were astounding no question. A few of the action scenes were great and yes the acting is good. But on a narrative and engagement level I kept waiting for something that was going to blow my mind, to send my emotions spiraling the way it's overwhelming and board sweepingly passionate audience response would suggest it should. And I kept thinking "must be the next episode where it gets awesome, must be the next episode, until there were no episodes left. I was no more exhilarated than most of the other shows I've been watching recently.

It was nice that the show had some politics, but they were nowhere near the level of the likes of Game of Thrones or The Wire (shows that are rated at a similar level). The one bit that was clearly the part that was supposed get the emotions going, the bit where Powder is abandoned by Vi and they're turned against each other, was undermined by the fact that it made absolutely no sense. Powder instantly jumping into the arms and joining the very person her and her companions have been trying so hard to kill. It would have made sense and had the desired effect if there was another faction that took her under their wing rather than Silco.

The music is often either bad, unsuited to the material or both- how the hell did Imagine Dragons get on here let alone the intro credits? And the whole thing certainly isn't devoid of cliche.

I understand that video game movies and shows always suck but is that all it is? Is Arcane held in such high regard simply for being a game adaptation that isn't terrible?

I gave up after the 3rd episode.

It's not as great as people claim it is

No, it's not. But I would say it did get better after episode 3. The action scenes got a lot better, they seemed quite simple and bland in the first few episodes but when the characters got older those set pieces became a lot more visceral.

I heard that at the time. That it was even better afterwards.

For me, episode 3 felt like enough of a conclusion that it made for the best jumping off point. Really didn't feel like investing in 2 sisters hating eachother over a misunderstanding
