With a nod to rudely_murray over at the Kevin Bacon thread, let's play 6 degrees of TOS! The rules: You name an actor, and the next poster has to link that actor to one of the Big 3 (Shatner, Nimoy, or Kelley) in as few moves as possible. Ideally 6 or less, hence, 6 degrees.
Example:
Player 1 names Bruce Lee.
Player 2 responds:
Player 2 then names another actor to link to one of the Big 3.
Feature films or TV shows only. Try not to select names which would be too easy, like linking Shatner to Patrick Stewart is no challenge!
Okay, here goes...
First try: Marlon Brando.

@sunshine62 Ciao.
If you followed option A, then the order is:
11) "Trash": They steal the Lassiter.
12) "The Message": They try to sell the Lassiter. Malcolm and Zoe get a message from an old 'war buddy'.
13) "Heart of Gold": Inara receives a message from her friend Nandi asking for help. Malcolm sleeps with Nandi and Inara decides to leave.
14) "Objects in Space": Inara is looking for a new place. A bounty hunter searches for River, who outsmarts him in the end.
For me season one had a satisfying ending, because there is no cliffhanger in the season's finale. The season ends with the main plot of that episode - the bounty hunter - resolved and the crew trusting River now.
Usually in a cliffhanger, the main plot of that episode is, e.g. someone is kidnapped, dying or on trial - guilty or innocent? - or the question is still 'who the murderer is', or something else has happened, etc., and it is not resolved in the same episode. You have to wait until the next episode or season to know how that story line ends. This was not the case. The final episode's main plot about the bounty hunter ended in the same episode.
Of course, the mystery of River remains, but we already know a lot about her. She was a very gifted child - now a young woman - even smarter than Simon, and the government experimented on her - operated on her brain - because they want to create people with psychic abilities, who they can control and train to become special agents - assassins - like you have seen in "Ariel". Simon helped her escape and there is a bounty on him and River. The Feds are also after River, because they consider her as their property and the government doesn't want it to become known to the public that the Alliance experiment on human beings or that other Alliance secrets - that River, being a 'reader', might also know - be revealed.
Fortunately, there is a conclusion of River's plot and some other story lines, which would have been told in season two and three, in the two-hour movie "Serenity (2005)".

Ciao wonder2wonder
I watched the episodes in the order you sent me initially hence "THE Message "was the last one.
I saw your last post after w2w, but it wouldn’t have made any difference because River's story either way remained hanging.
From what we are told in the season one:
a. she was sent by her parent to a special school for highly intelligent kids.
b. Simon starts worrying about his sister when he receives, what he perceives and warns their father, is a letter in code from his sister asking for help.
c. Simon's father tells him he is imagining things but Simon refuses to drop the matter.
d. Simon retrieves his sister and they are on the run, on abord the Serenity.
e. we learn she can read minds and senses things about to happen (eg. the birth of the child in Heat of Gold)
f. the authorities opened her skull and mucked around in her brain to exclude certain emotions.
g. she is unstable but her brother is looking for a drug that can help her.
h. the Authorities want her back and are searching for her.
I was hoping to see her caught, to see the facility, to see the crew rescue her...and above all see her in action.
w2w Of course, the mystery of River remains, but we already know a lot about her. She was a very gifted child - now a young woman - even smarter than Simon, and the government experimented on her - operated on her brain - because they want to create people with psychic abilities, who they can control and train to become special agents - assassins - like you have seen in "Ariel"
In season one we get to see her abilities to read minds (in Safe)and foresee events (girl goes in labour) .. but we have no way to tell if she already had these abilities or if they are a consequence of all the experiments they did on her.
I say it's more likely she already had these abilities and they enhanced them... that's why they used her and not their best-trained soldiers for the experiment/project.
You say in your last post they wanted to create people with psychic abilities.... you must have got this piece of info from watching the film.
In Heart of Gold, River didn't use these psychic abilities you mentioned.......she used a mathematical equation and then shot them dead in a split second.
And the assassins used a weird device that created deadly sonic waves to kill the officers and guards that had captured River, her brother and Jayne.
It’s obvious the writers didn’t want to spill all the beans straight away because they were counting on a season 2 which didn’t happen.
I believe River would have become the pulling force of the series in season 2.
Season one was supposed to get the public to warm up to the captain, crew members, and passengers, offer some back story, settle divergences among them, and by the end of the season, have them united like a family.
Change of plan will watch the film this weekend..I binge-watched too much yesterday and I have a bad headache.

@sunshine62 Ciao.
No, what I wrote was what I thought in 2002 after the season ended. I hadn't seen the movie yet and only knew that it had been cancelled. But, there were still a lot of questions - not only about River - and then I usually start thinking of possible answers, different story lines. And with all the science fiction that I have read and all the movies and television shows that I have seen, it is not difficult to do that.
Some examples of sources: "X-Men comics" (mutation, government experiments), "Star Trek" (genetic experiments, humanoids born with the ability), "Babylon 5" (Psy Corps, human telepaths trained and controlled).
The plot often is that the government and secret agencies are doing all kinds of experiments and persecuting anyone who could be a threat to their security. So it is easy to think that RIver's plot is along similar lines.
"Objects in Space" was the last episode that I saw in 2002 and the discussion by the crew provided me with some more clues about River.
Phrases:
Simon: "She's deeply intuitive."
Malcolm: "I don't think she's intuitive. I think she's a reader."
Zoe: "Psychic?"
Malcolm (to Simon): "You tell me. You've been studying what they've done to her."
Simon: "They've, uh, they definitely altered the way she reacts to things, even the way she perceives."
Shepherd: "The Alliance could have any number of uses for a psychic."
Zoe: "A psychic... or an assassin."
Headaches are terrible. I hope yours goes away quickly.
By the way, here is an interesting post that you should see before the movie.

Yes, I remember that conversation.
that's the trouble when I binge-watch ..it's easy to miss or forget a scene ..I should watch max three episodes per day/session.
You have definitely watched and analysed more series than I have. I have seen 6 superhero films: 4 X-men films, Thor, and Age of Ultron because there was James Spader.
Star Trek, Babylon, and Firefly are sci-fic and X-men are superheroes....I can see you have categorized these series far more. That's why I always enjoy your input and links, they are thorough.
I watched the link you provided ..interesting to see the change in River as the programming progressed. Was her mission to kill the guy or was she just rebelling...why did she use the pen and not her mind to kill him?
After the video was finished there was one on" River 's best moments" so I watched it..they showed the part when Jayne is in the infirmary after River had slashed his chest .. River warns him at the end of the scene that she could kill him with her MIND. I had forgotten that.
I'm looking forward to watching the film and confronting our thoughts.
