"Transverse bulkheads. We've set up emergency forcefields between all decks and every section. In the event of a cataclysmic breach most of us will be protected."

"Ingenious."

"I was inspired by an ancient steamship, the Titanic. The engineers of the day constructed a series of special bulkheads, sort of like a honeycomb, that would lower into place if they suffered a major hull breach. In theory, they could stay afloat even with half the ship filled with water."

RMS Titanic

"The RMS Titanic was a White Star Line British passenger ship, which sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on the 15th of April in 1912, after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City, United States."

"In 1985, the wreck was finally located by a joint French–American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The wreck has been the focus of intense interest and has been visited by numerous expeditions."

"OceanGate Expeditions, the company of undersea explorers, scientists and filmmakers, which completed a successful inaugural expedition to the storied shipwreck in 2021, will be embarking on five missions during the summer of 2022 to further document the site before it's gone forever."

I was watching an episode from one of the Star Trek shows, and there was this dialogue where the Titanic was mentioned, so I thought I'd look it up. It's a pity that it will soon disappear, while other shipwrecks that have been in the sea much longer, are still there.

Thanks.

Also...

Quite surprised and sad about Titanic’s dilemma. Just took it for granted that it would always be.

I've read various things over the years, wasn't some of the bulkhead safety overwhelmed by stuff like the ship's angle so that water went OVER the bulkheads too?

Excerpt from Causes and Effects of the Rapid Sinking of the Titanic :

The rapid sinking of the Titanic was worsened by the poor design of the transverse bulkheads of the watertight compartments. As water flooded the damaged compartments of the hull, the ship began to pitch forward, and water in the damaged compartments was able to spill over into adjacent compartments.

Naw, never watched the original release either. I prefer the Time Tunnel and Futurama versions.

There was also an episode of Supernatural where a demon hated Celine Dion so much that he went back in time and stopped the Titanic from sinking, so she wouldn't become famous. Hilarity ensued.

The Iceberg was framed.

... Excerpt from LiveSearch for missing Titanic sub expanded into deeper waters:

Summary

A pipe-laying vessel is at the scene where a tourist submersible went missing with five onboard while diving to the wreck of the Titanic

The ship has two remote-control underwater vessels capable of searching for the OceanGate Titan

British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman are two of the five on board

Another of those believed to be in the craft is British businessman and explorer Hamish Harding

Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former French Navy diver who has explored the Titanic before, is also on the vessel

Contact with the small sub was lost about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive to the wreck site off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, on Sunday

It is thought the crew members have 52 hours of oxygen left at most, with experts warning rescuers are short of time

Stockton Rush, chief executive of OceanGate - the firm behind the dive - is also being widely reported to be on the vessel

R.I.P.

Stockton Rush (61), Paul-Henri Nargeolet (77), Hamish Harding (58), Shahzada Dawood (48) and his son Suleman Dawood (19)

... Excerpt from Families mourn five killed as Titanic sub safety questioned:

Summary

Tributes are paid to the five men killed on board the Titan sub in what US officials say was a "catastrophic implosion"

The victims were Hamish Harding, 58, Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son Suleman Dawood, 19, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, and Stockton Rush, 61

Their families have expressed "profound grief" and paid tribute to their exploration endeavours

It's emerged the US Navy originally detected “an acoustic anomaly consistent with an implosion” shortly after the Titan lost contact on Sunday

A robotic diving vehicle found major fragments of the sub on the seafloor about 1,600ft (480m) from the Titanic shipwreck on Thursday

James Cameron, director of the 1997 Titanic film who has completed 33 dives to the wreck, said he suspected a disaster after the sub went missing

Experts have questioned the safety of the Titan submersible and how private sector deep-sea expeditions are regulated

... James Cameron blasts hunt for Titanic sub as 'prolonged nightmarish charade': Director claims US knew vessel had 'imploded' HOURS after it lost contact but let people 'run around talking about banging and oxygen when they knew where it was'

But they were going to search until they found the wreckage, regardless.

But they were going to search until they found the wreckage, regardless.

I have my doubts....so hear me out.

In the press release, the official said that there had been a catastrophic implosion ...he also added that the large fragments would not be recuperated because the risks were too high.

Rescuers hoped up to the end to find them alive.. had they failed to find them in time, they would at least have recuperated the submarine so they could return the victims to their families.

On the other hand, had the navy not withheld the fact that it had detected an acoustic anomaly consistent with an implosion, matters would have gone differently.

Recuers would have connected that important info with the fact that shortly after the mothership had lost contact with Titan. They would have understood the tragic fate of the submarine. Implosion.

At that point, it is very likely that already on day one the search would have been aborted ....with no bodies to be salvaged it was too risky ( and costly ) to recuperate mere parts of the wreckage.

You can believe that if you want, but the navy couldn't have been 100% certain of the implosion, and there was still drama - and ratings, and money - in finding the wreckage.

What rescuers? Last I heard, they were using other remote-operated vehicles (ROVs).
