Or the classic The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) it's a bit old for a lot of the modern audiences, but still one of the best first contact movies made.

Alien Nation (1988) was a fairly well done first contact film in it's day, but I don't think I'd want to watch it again now. It's probably aged horribly.

I thought about V the mini series(The original, not the crappy remake). I'm not sure if it qualifies as "serious", but the first episode is quite realistic and well done.

Now that you mention T.V shows Colony isn't a bad show (if you can stand Sarah Wayne Callies - Ricks wife from The Walking Dead and her perpetual look of shock).

Edit - woah I just noticed season two has started. I've got five episode to watch. Laters.

Alien Nation spawned a TV series, which made me think of it.

I haven't heard of Colony. I might check it out.

It's quite similar to V in a lot of ways, in fact very similar. If you like V you'll like Colony, and yes I loved the old V and the mini-series. Hugely under rated in it's day.

I remember trying to watch the Alien Nation T.V series when it came out as I liked the film but it was really bad and could never get into it.

oh please no, I made the mistake and watched Europa Report recently and it was rubbish everything else mentioned are decent movies, but ER is just movie with horrible acting, decent score and there is not really any contact with aliens, not that there would be any in Moon, but that is some HQ movie with great acting and score and nice sad plot, ER is just some C class movie straight to DVD for 1USD
